If you could take any car available under 30k and order it with a gated shifter for 40k would you? If you would what car?

$10,000 for what's essentially a long-throw shifter?

Not sure I'd trust myself dailying a gated shifter, my hamfistedness would cause a lot of unpleasant metal on metal noise.

Nah. If you have access to a drill press you have access to a home-made gated shifter. I don't think it's worth a $10k premium.
THAT BEING SAID you know how manufacturers have the no-cost $0 manual transmission option (so they can save $1,500 when you want a manual)? Why not give the consumer the option to have a gated shifter installed at the factory for say $500?

a shiny long-throw shifter.

If the car was normally an automatic and otherwise wouldn't get a manual, possibly. But for 10k you can add shifter gates onto most manuals, I think.
However, I would totally pay 10k if I could take a flappy paddle car like the Jaguar F-Type and put a gated shifter in it.

Yes, I understand the appeal, but I've never heard of a $10,000 shift kit.

I know, right? GTFO of here...

I'm sure Mansory or West Coast Customs can fix that for you.

40 grand? Gated shifter? How about this Lambo?

How about that Ferrari you mean?

I like them but if my car doesn't have it, I wouldn't spend the money on it. I like my leather boot, thank you very much.

I wouldn't spend the money, I'm kinda the opposite if I had a car with a gated shifter I would probably toss it for just a boot. I tossed the slider plate that comes in my 68 camaros console because it I hated the noise and catch and hang up on the lighted of shifts. Just good ol boots for me.
I think a Ferrari with a muscle car hurst handle and white knob would be cool.

It's a running joke to call any super car a Lambo.

No...
I wouldn't pay a 30% markup for any single feature.

Are you asking if a steel plate regulating the travel of the shift pattern is worth $10,000 on any given application?
C'mon. We're steadfast Jalops here, but thats delusional.
![]() 06/24/2014 at 14:46 |

Not so much any application, more curious if it would be worth it in any application. I at least expected some people to break the $30,000 rule and throw out some BMWs or something instead of a total shutout. I also could've sworn I read, on Jalopnik IIRC, that there is a lot more engineering besides just a metal plate.

Nope, for $10K I can find my own gears, or take a router and cut out my own gate plate.

Having driven a couple gated shifters I have to admit I don't really get it. I guess it helps you not miss a shift, but it seems like more of an annoyance than anything... at best a novelty. I can appreciate a stick but the gates to me add no real value, no matter how many videos doug demuro posts. ;)
![]() 06/24/2014 at 15:42 |

Yeah might as well buy a car that came with it.
![]() 06/24/2014 at 15:52 |

It is a novelty but so are many other things that make up the driving experience. I make no claims that it's faster, just maybe a little more of an experience.

10 k to convert a non manual car to manual? Regardless of gated shifter or boot, sounds like a deal to me.
![]() 06/24/2014 at 16:01 |

I wouldn't do that..but, I'll take a R8 and those have gated shifters :)

Yeah it definitely adds something to the experience.
